Main crops grown in the regions and their importance
The kind of crop grown in a region depends on local conditions and the population’s traditional way of life. In Karakalpakstan and Khorezm rice and cotton are grown, in Tashkent region vegetables and fruit, in the Fergana Valley gardening, cotton and grain growing are well developed; in Samarkand, Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya and Jizzakh regions mostly grain and melons are grown. Vegetables are herbaceous plants with juicy fruit or fleshy parts used for food; they are rich in vitamins. Cereals contain carbohydrates, fats and proteins and are also fodder for livestock. Legumes (peas, beans, soy) have 20–30 percent protein and enrich the soil with nitrogen. Oil crops (sesame, sunflower, peanut) have 15–60 percent fat in the seeds; fibre crops include cotton, hemp and flax. Irrigated farming is widespread; on rain-fed land mainly wheat, watermelon, melon, mung bean and maize are sown. When working in the field protect your head from the sun, work with adults and never eat unwashed vegetables.
