Explanation

Hand work on metal is done at the locksmith’s workbench. Its main parts are the table top, the vice and the protective screen. The vice grips the blank firmly: when you turn the handle the lead screw turns in the nut and moves the movable jaw. The jaw faces have ridges so the blank does not slip. The bench height must suit your height: stand beside it and bend your right arm at the elbow to 90°; if the elbow just touches the top of the vice, the height is right. The protective screen is used only while metal is being cut.

Worked examples
If the bench is too high, the pupil tires quickly and the quality of work drops.
When a blank is clamped, turning the handle brings the jaws together; the blank must not move.
Class activity

Vice model: pupils make a card-and-paper-clip model showing how a vice works (an adult cuts the card with scissors) and label its parts. A real vice is touched only when the teacher shows it and under supervision: never put fingers between the jaws.

Practice
1
Which part of the bench clamps and holds the blank?
2
Why do the vice jaws have ridges?
3
How do we check that the bench height is right?
4
Why does bench height matter?
