Cutting and sewing the tie-cap
Before cutting, check the fabric (stains, tears, broken threads), measure its width and length, find its right and wrong sides, iron it and trim off the selvedge. The pattern is placed economically on the fabric and traced with chalk or soap; the seam allowance must equal the one on the pattern. To sew the cap, fold each side 0.5 cm then 1 cm and baste it, then machine-stitch 0.1 cm from the basting line; the bottom edge is folded 0.5 and 2 cm, the top edge 0.5 and 4 cm. The basting thread is removed and the seam given damp-heat treatment (pressing), then the ties are threaded between the top and bottom 2 cm seams. Matching parts of the finished item must be equal and symmetrical, and the seams of even length and well pressed. Work with scissors, pins, needle, machine and iron is done under the teacher’s supervision with the safety rules.
Paper practice: fold the side of a 30 × 20 cm paper 0.5 cm and then 1 cm, measuring with a ruler. Work with fabric, needle and scissors is done with the teacher, and only the teacher irons.
