Explanation

In a test there is usually a dictation, a text from a picture, or a retelling. In a dictation we listen carefully, spell words correctly and put punctuation marks. In a retelling we write the text we heard in our own words and in order. Before handing in, always read it through and check the spelling.

Worked examples
Practice dictation text. “Spring”. Spring has come. Rain fell on the streets. The trees blossomed. Birds are singing. Children are playing in the garden.
Plan for a retelling: 1) who it is about; 2) what happened; 3) how it ended.
Class activity

“Mini dictation”: the teacher reads a sentence twice, children write it, then check each other’s work in pairs.
