Explanation

Roman numerals are written with letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100. If a smaller numeral comes before a larger one it is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40. If it comes after, it is added: VI = 6, XI = 11, XV = 15, XXI = 21. A date in digits: 1-sentabr. In words: birinchi sentabr. Centuries are written in Roman numerals: XXI asr — yigirma birinchi asr (21st century).

Worked examples
IV = 4, VII = 7, IX = 9, XIV = 14, XXV = 25, XL = 40, C = 100.
1-sentabr — Bilimlar kuni (Day of Knowledge). 1-oktabr — O‘qituvchi va murabbiylar kuni (Teachers’ Day).
Class activity

“Roman numeral machine”: children write the number on a card in Roman numerals and a partner checks. Then the reverse.
