Spelling of adjectives
Textbook: Part 3, pp. 92–94
GoalKnow how adjectives are written: with a hyphen, joined, or apart.
New words
snow-white · oppoqice-cold · sop-sovuqdark blue · to‘q ko‘klight yellow · och sariq
Explanation
There are three ways to write adjectives. When we strengthen a feature we usually use a hyphen: sop-sovuq (ice-cold), qop-qora (pitch-black), yap-yangi (brand-new), ko‘m-ko‘k (deep blue). The strengthened form of oq (white) is one word, written together: oppoq. Adjectives showing a light or dark shade are two words, written apart: och sariq (light yellow), to‘q ko‘k (dark blue), tim qora (jet black). For example: sovuq suv (cold water) — sop-sovuq suv (ice-cold water: the feature is stronger).
Worked examples
ko‘k osmon — ko‘m-ko‘k osmon (blue sky — deep blue sky); oq qor — oppoq qor (white snow — snow-white snow); sariq gul — och sariq gul (yellow flower — light yellow flower).
Yangi kitob — yap-yangi kitob (new book — brand-new book); qora ko‘z — qop-qora ko‘z (dark eyes — jet-black eyes); katta tarvuz — kap-katta tarvuz (big watermelon — huge watermelon).
