Our discoverer ancestors
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 63–65
GoalName our ancestors and famous inventors and what they did.
New words
discoverer · kashfiyotchiastrolabe (star-measuring tool) · usturlobresearch · tadqiqotstar · yulduz
Explanation
Our ancestors made a big contribution to science. Ahmad al-Farghani created the nilometer, a structure that measures the water of the Nile. The astrolabe is an instrument that helped find the positions of stars. Mirzo Ulugh Beg determined the positions of more than a thousand stars. In the world, Thomas Edison improved the electric lamp and Alexander Popov invented the radio.
Worked examples
“Discoveries of our forefathers”. Our forefathers watched the sky and studied the stars. The astrolabe helped them to know where the stars are. Al-Farghani built a nilometer which measured how much water the Nile had. Mirzo Ulugh Beg compiled a table of stars. We too dream of discovering new things by studying.
The first bicycle is linked to the Scot Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the radio to Alexander Popov, and the improved electric lamp to Edison.
Class activity
“Who invented what?”: match name and invention cards (Farghani – nilometer, Edison – lamp, Popov – radio).
Practice
1
What does the nilometer measure?
The amount of water in the Nile
2
What was the astrolabe needed for?
To find the positions of stars
3
Who compiled a table of stars?
Mirzo Ulugh Beg
4
Who invented the radio?
Alexander Popov
5
What would you like to invent in the future?
The child tells their own idea (e.g. a flying bicycle).
