The story “Grapes”
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 47–48
GoalFind the cause of a quarrel in a story heard; tell why knowing many languages is useful.
New words
language · tilto understand · tushunmoqtranslator · tarjimonquarrel · janjal
Explanation
In Jaloliddin Rumi’s story “Uzum” (Grapes) people quarrel because they call one thing by different names in different languages, and a wise person reconciles them. Conclusion: a person who knows many languages understands others better. Proverb: “Til bilgan yo‘lda qolmas” (One who knows languages is never stranded). After listening we answer questions and read our own text.
Worked examples
“A misunderstanding at the market”. Three tourists got into an argument at the market. One shouted “olma”, the second “apple”, the third “yabloko”. Each thought the others were insulting him. At that moment a child held out an apple to all three. The tourists fell silent and then burst out laughing. They had been saying the same thing in different languages.
Conclusion: misunderstanding often comes from not knowing the language.
Class activity
“Hello in many languages”: children say “hello” in the languages they know (Assalomu alaykum, Hello, Privet ...) and the teacher writes them on the board.
