Generalising words with homogeneous parts
Textbook: pp. 57–60
GoalFind generalising words with homogeneous parts and put the colon and dash before or after them.
A generalising word is a common name for the homogeneous parts and has the same function in the sentence as they do: «В саду росло всё: яблони, груши, виноград». It may stand before the homogeneous parts or after them. If it stands before, a colon follows it: «На полке стояло всё: книги, тетради, словари». If it stands after, a dash precedes it: «Книги, тетради, словари — всё лежало на столе». If the homogeneous parts are in the middle of the sentence, a colon goes before them and a dash after them: «Спортивные игры: футбол, теннис, волейбол — любит вся школа». Generalising words are often «все, всё, везде, всюду, никто, ничто, всегда» or nouns with a general meaning («цветы, посуда, одежда»).
Worked examples
«Мы побывали везде: в парке, на набережной, у старой башни» — the generalising word comes first, a colon follows.
«Ромашки, васильки, колокольчики — всё это летние цветы» — homogeneous parts first, then a dash. «Летние цветы: ромашки, васильки, колокольчики — растут на лугу» — in the middle.
Class activity

Why is a colon used when the generalising word comes first and a dash when it comes after?
A colon announces the list that follows; a dash sums up a list that has just been given.
