Explanation

The marked or unmarked use of case suffixes, their interchange and their synonymy with postpositions create stylistic differences. If the accusative is marked, the object is singled out and emphasised: gazetani o‘qidi (“he read the newspaper”); if it is unmarked the emphasis disappears: gazeta o‘qidi (“he read a newspaper”). The accusative means the whole object, the ablative a part of it: sharbatni ichdi (“he drank the juice”, all of it) – sharbatdan ichdi (“he drank some of the juice”). The dative can be exchanged with the postposition uchun: onamga oldim (“I bought it for/to my mother”) – onam uchun oldim (“I bought it for my mother’s sake”; the second states the purpose more clearly). In poetry the genitive and accusative are shortened to the -n form, adding melody and expressiveness: yurtin, qadrin. If each coordinated member takes the genitive suffix itself (Anvarning va Lolaning kitobi, “Anvar’s and Lola’s book”), each of them is emphasised separately.

Worked examples
Gazetani o‘qidi – gazeta o‘qidi; sharbatni ichdi – sharbatdan ichdi: the choice of mark and case changes the nuance.
«Maktab tomon yurdi» (“He walked toward the school”) – «maktabga yurdi» (“He walked to the school”); «do‘stim uchun» (“for my friend”) – «do‘stimga» (“to my friend”): a postposition and a case can be near-synonyms.
