publicistic style · publitsistik uslubartistic (literary) style · badiiy uslubscientific style · ilmiy uslubofficial style · rasmiy uslub
Explanation
These four styles occur mainly in writing. The publicistic style is used in mass media such as newspapers, magazines, radio and television: it informs on social topics and influences the reader’s opinion. In the artistic style thought is given through images, with figurative meaning, comparisons and descriptive words. The scientific style is marked by accuracy, logical order and terms, and has little emotion. The official style is used in documents such as decisions, orders and applications and is characterised by objectivity and set phrases. Although the written form leads in these styles, a scientific report or the performance of a stage work is oral.
Worked examples
Publicistic and artistic: «Shahrimizda yangi kutubxona ochildi; yoshlar uchun bu bilim maskaniga aylanadi» (“A new library opened in our city; for young people it will become a place of knowledge”) – «Kuz bog‘larga oltin libos kiydirdi, shamol esa barglar bilan sirlashdi» (“Autumn dressed the gardens in golden clothes and the wind whispered secrets with the leaves”).
Scientific and official: «Son predmetning miqdori va tartibini bildiradi» (“The numeral denotes the quantity and order of objects”) – «Ushbu buyruq imzolangan kundan boshlab kuchga kiradi» (“This order comes into force from the day of signing”).
Class activity
“Choose the genre”: the teacher reads mixed pieces – a newspaper headline, a line of poetry, a definition and a part of an order – and pupils find the style.
Practice
1
Where is the publicistic style used and what purpose does it serve?
In mass media; it informs and influences readers’ opinion.
2
State the difference between the artistic and the scientific style.
The artistic style relies on imagery, the scientific one on accuracy and terms.
3
Which style does «Mazkur qaror e’lon qilingan kundan kuchga kiradi» belong to?
The official style: it has a set phrase and an objective tone.
4
Why are “sugary” expressions not used in official documents?
A document must be objective and exact; emotional colouring blurs the meaning.
