Explanation

Morphological means (plural, case, subjective evaluation, tense, person-number, negation) mainly give functional colouring, and some also express emotional-expressive meaning. -lar can express respect, irony, approximation and generalisation; case forms single out emphasis and distinguish part and whole; suffixes like -cha and -jon express affection or belittling; tense forms can shift; person-number forms express formal and informal address and modesty; -ma also gives firm affirmation. Among syntactic means word order (inversion, logical stress), sentence types, rhetorical questions, vocatives, introductory and inserted units give stylistic meaning. In text analysis first determine the style and then the function of these means.

Worked examples
Analysis: «Ey do‘stlarim, kim bu yurtni sevmaydi?! Balki, bizning bog‘imiz (bobomdan qolgan) kichik, lekin u – yurtning bir bo‘lagi.» (“O my friends, who does not love this land?! Perhaps our garden (inherited from my grandfather) is small, but it is a piece of the land.”) – a vocative, a rhetorical question, an introductory and an inserted unit together.
Analysis: «Ustoz keldilar» (“The teacher has come”) – a respect form (-lar); «Bu maqolani biz uch oy yozdik», – dedi yakka muallif (“‘We wrote this article for three months,’ said the sole author”) – a shift of person-number: one person modestly says «we».
Class activity

“Find the means”: the teacher reads mixed sentences; groups show on a card a means such as plural, vocative or inserted unit.

Practice
1
Name three stylistic meanings of the plural form.
2
State the difference between introductory and inserted units.
3
What is the hidden content of the rhetorical question «Kim ham bu ishni qilardi?»?
4
Why do we begin text analysis with the style?
