Explanation
In revision first recall the speech styles: colloquial, artistic, publicistic, scientific and official. Each style differs in its aim, language and place of use; stylistic colouring may be functional or emotional-expressive. In vocabulary compare synonyms, homonyms, paronyms, dialect words, obsolete words, terms and idioms. In syntax revisit word order, sentence types, rhetorical questions, vocatives, introductory and inserted units, compound sentences, direct and indirect speech, text and quotation. In an exam-style question first determine the style of the text, then answer by naming and justifying the language means and punctuation marks. Make a list of your mistakes and relearn them.
Worked examples
Identifying style: «Muhtaram mudir, Sizdan ruxsat so‘rayman» (“Dear director, I ask your permission”) – official style (application), because of the address form and the standard structure.
Analysis: «Voy, qanday go‘zal manzara!» (“Oh, what a beautiful view!”) – colloquial/artistic style, with an interjection and emotion; such an expression does not occur in a scientific text.
Class activity
“Exam blitz”: each group writes questions on style, vocabulary and syntax for the others.
Give two synonyms of «yurak» (heart) and state the stylistic difference.
For example: «dil» and «ko‘ngil» – more poetic-artistic; «yurak» – neutral.
3
Analyse the introductory word, punctuation and direct speech in «Albatta, men borishga tayyorman», – dedi Nodir.
«Albatta» is an introductory word of confidence set off by a comma; the direct speech is in quotation marks, followed by a comma and dash, the author’s words in a small letter.
4
Why is justifying the answer important in an exam?
Because knowledge must be proved with a rule and an example, not guessed.
