Explanation

A text is a complete unit of speech whose parts are connected in meaning and grammar and which has a topic and a main idea. The main features are wholeness (a single topic), cohesion (links between sentences), completeness and the presence of a main idea. A quotation is a passage taken from another author’s work. In a scientific text the source of a quotation must always be named: author, title, year and page. An idea taken without a source is plagiarism, that is, appropriating someone else’s work. A quotation is given exactly in «…», and the source is given in brackets or in a footnote. In a work of fiction a quotation often appears without its source being named, as an allusion; the reader recognises it on their own.

Worked examples
Scientific quotation: «Til – xalqning ma’naviy boyligi» (“Language is the spiritual wealth of a people”) (D. Nazarova, Til va jamiyat, 2020, p. 15) – the source is given exactly. (Invented example for illustration.)
Artistic allusion: a writer inserts the words of a famous proverb into a character’s speech without naming the source; this is a stylistic allusion, not plagiarism.
Class activity

“Rebuild the text”: students arrange mixed sentences into a logical text and find the main idea.

Practice
1
What are the main features of a text?
2
What is given when a quotation is used in scientific work?
3
In which case is it plagiarism: a quotation with its source, or an idea without one?
4
Why is an unsourced quotation allowed in fiction but not in scientific work?
