Explanation

“David Copperfield” is a novel by the English writer Charles Dickens (1850). In the book’s extract a boy goes to a relative who looks after him and sends him to a good school. I do not retell the novel here; instead I wrote my own short text on the same theme. You will need the Past Simple and the Past Continuous. Read the questions and find the answers in the text. To describe a character: kind, strict, generous, lonely.

Worked examples
“The new home”. When Aziz was ten, his parents went to work abroad and he moved to his aunt Gulnora’s house. At first he felt lonely. Gulnora was strict but generous: she cooked his favourite plov and checked his homework every evening. One night, while he was reading, she brought him a blanket. “You are not alone,” she said. Aziz smiled for the first time in weeks.
Mini-dialogue. — Why did Aziz feel lonely at first? — He missed his parents. — What did his aunt do for him? — She cooked for him, checked his homework and brought a blanket.
Class activity
