Livestock breeding, animal care and improving product quality
Breeding bulls are used to produce offspring. Over-feeding or under-feeding them both do harm: always rich feed makes the body fat, and poor fodder weakens it. So a ration is composed on a scientific basis: during breeding use, 1.3 feed units and 140 g of digestible protein are planned per 100 kg of live weight. The main products of cattle are milk and meat; hide, internal organs, wool, horns and hooves are by-products. A high-yielding cow turns fodder into milk very efficiently and her udder is large and grows larger each year. Milk yield depends on the rate and calories of her feed; if feed is neglected, the cow quickly gets thin. Bulls can be strong and suddenly dangerous: children do not go near them and on a farm walk only with trained staff and adults.
Calculation: work out the daily feed units and protein for a 500 kg bull (1.3 and 140 g per 100 kg). On a farm visit do not approach animals without the teacher’s permission.
