Practical: repairing items with split seams
For mending, the workplace is prepared to suit the job: table, chair, work box, a machine and iron if needed; light must fall well. Jobs may be hand sewing, sewing on a button, making a buttonhole, putting on a patch, sewing up ripped seams, sewing on a hook. Seams rip because of sudden movements, taking too big a step and poor thread. To mend a ripped seam take thread of the fabric’s colour and a needle to suit the fabric’s thickness. Procedure: remove the loose threads from the ripped place and iron it, pin and baste by hand, sew with back stitch along the line of the machine seam, remove the basting and iron, then check the quality. A tear is folded right sides inside, pinned, basted, sewn with small overcast stitches, the basting removed and ironed. Use needle, scissors and iron under the supervision of a teacher or adult.
Repair workshop: pupils identify a ripped seam on an old garment and write an answer to “why did it rip?”. Needle work is only on the teacher’s instruction.
