Finishing the pieces; sewing the doll
Before sewing the body, 4 darts of 3 cm are marked on the wrong side of the head and sewn, and the places of eyebrows, eyes and mouth are marked on the right side. The body pieces are put right sides together and sewn on three sides with a 0.5 cm seam, leaving an opening at the neck; the body is turned right side out and stuffed, and the opening is closed with a blind stitch. The legs and arms are also sewn on three sides, stuffed and joined to the body. Dress pieces: front 1, back 2, plus a ruffle cut on the bias (45°) 4 cm wide for the collar and sleeve hems, and 2 trouser pieces. The seam allowance on the back centre line is overcast and sewn 0.5 cm down to the notch; shoulder and side seams are sewn 0.5 cm, overcast and pressed. The trouser pieces are folded in two and the inseam sewn 0.5 cm, then the seat seam, and the waist and hem are folded and sewn. Every seam is pressed (the teacher uses the iron) because a pressed seam lies flat.
Order cards: put the sewing-step cards in the right order (mark, sew, turn, stuff, join). The real sewing is under the teacher’s supervision.
