Explanation

A patch pocket is sewn on top of the apron. A single pocket goes on the centre line; two pockets go on the marked places. The rounded part of the pocket is finished like the apron hem; the top edge is folded 0.5 cm then 2 cm, basted and machined. The straight sides are folded 1 cm to the wrong side and basted. The finished pocket is pinned on the marked place and basted to the apron on three sides. It is machine-stitched beside the basting, the seam is secured at start and end, then the basting is removed and the pockets pressed. The top edge of the pocket is not sewn on, because the hand goes in there.

Worked examples
The pocket is sewn on 3 sides; the 4th (top) stays open.
With 1 cm folds on both sides, a pocket cut 14 cm wide ends up 14 − 2 = 12 cm wide.
Class activity

Paper pocket: cut a 12 × 14 cm pocket from coloured paper (scissors as directed by an adult), fold the edges 1 cm and glue it onto a notebook page on three sides, leaving the top open.
