Practical: machine rules, threading, seams
Machine work has four stages: preparing (foot raised, threads passed, stitch length set), starting (fabric under the foot, lower the needle, then the foot), working and finishing. While sewing, the fabric must not be pulled or pushed; the machine feeds it itself. At the end the needle and foot are raised, the fabric is drawn out with the left hand and the thread is cut leaving 10–15 cm. First practise on paper with no thread: along parallel lines 2 cm apart the needle leaves holes, which trains the eye and hand. Machine seams are of three kinds: joining (joins two pieces), hem (folds and sews an edge) and decorative (pleat, tuck); seam widths run from 0.1 to 1.5 cm. All practice is done under the teacher’s instructions and supervision.
Technology-card game: the name, drawing and procedure of each seam type are on separate cards and pairs match them. The practical part is only done with the teacher, on paper without thread.
