Hand sewing: tools and equipment
Hand sewing is done standing or sitting. The workplace for hand work: a smooth table, drawers, a work box for thread and tools, a waste container, a footrest. Posture matters: feet resting on the footrest, legs not crossed, body and head straight or leaning slightly forward, the item 25–30 cm from the eyes, light from the left. A complete cycle of interlacing of threads in fabric is a stitch (in folk speech qaviq); successive stitches form a line of stitches. Tools: hand needles (numbered 1–12, odd numbers longer), scissors, thimble (worn on the middle finger, protects from needle pricks), a 150 cm tape measure, mannequin, thread-cutting ring, bodkin, pins, ruler, tracing wheel and chalk (a mark not thicker than 0.1 cm). Needles and pins are sharp: they are never put in the mouth and not played with.
Workplace check: in pairs check each other’s sitting against a list of 6 rules (feet on rest, 25–30 cm from eyes, light from left, back straight…). Using pictures of tools.
