Sketch and technological map of a blank: choosing, marking out, preparing
Making any item requires a drawing and a technological map. Compiling a map teaches how to develop the item’s construction, choose a blank and determine its size, set the order of processes and steps, and choose tools and equipment; it develops technical thinking. The map has consecutively numbered rows: operation, sketch, measuring and working tools, fixtures. Wood carving is a widespread kind of Uzbek decorative applied art: a pattern is drawn, cut and carved into wood. Khiva carving is known for its monumental carving and the natural colour of wood kept, Bukhara carving for gold and silver water and colours, Margilan carving for flat carving with a deep ground, and Tashkent carving for flat relief drawing without ground. Tools: kovza, straight, gouge, ground, fish-back, morpech, chekma and spatula chisels. Carving tools are very sharp: they are used only under a master or teacher.
Map table: the pupil compiles a technological map table for making a pencil holder (7 rows, each with an operation and tool) and draws the sketch. Making is under the teacher’s supervision.
