Explanation

After school, technical and vocational schools (texnikums) teach several woodworking trades: master artist in wood carving, master artist in ornament painting, master of woodworking technology and furniture production, master of making and repairing musical instruments, master of lacquer miniature, and designer of furniture. Each trade needs its own knowledge and skills. A carpenter must know wood properties, how to read drawings and tools. A designer thinks together about the look, comfort and strength of an item. An ornament painter and carver need patience, fine taste and precision. Machine operators, finishers and carpenters also work in wood-processing production. In choosing a trade, interest, ability and hard work matter.

Worked examples
A maker of a doira (drum) must know the properties of wood and how it sounds.
A furniture designer first draws a sketch, then a drawing and technological map are prepared.
Class activity

Trade interview: each pupil asks a person who works with wood (carpenter, craftsman) in the family or neighbourhood 3 questions and writes the answers. Told to the class in 1 minute.
