Words with consonants side by side: pronunciation and spelling
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 32–35
GoalTell the pronunciation and spelling of words ending in two consonants.
New words
friend · do‘stAugust · avgustcapital city · poytaxttime · vaqt
Explanation
Some words end in two consonants side by side: do‘st, avgust, poytaxt, vaqt, juft. In speech the last sound often drops out: do‘st sounds like “do‘s”, poytaxt like “poytax”. In writing both letters are written. To check, add a vowel: do‘sti, poytaxti, vaqti.
Worked examples
do‘st — do‘sti; avgust — avgusti; juft (pair) — jufti: t is written at the end.
Toshkent is the capital of Uzbekistan. The word poytaxt has both x and t in writing.
Class activity
“The missing sound”: one child says a word without its last sound (“do‘s”); the partner writes it in full and checks it by adding a vowel.
Practice

Fill in the last letter: do‘s…, avgus…, juf…, vaq….
do‘st, avgust, juft, vaqt
2
