The guiding lighthouse
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 70–71
GoalKnow the four directions and the job of the compass; find the comparison in a poem.
New words
compass · kompasnorth · shimolsouth · janubeast, west · sharq, g‘arb
Explanation
The horizon has four main directions: north, south, east and west. The compass is an instrument that finds these directions; its needle always points north. The first compass was invented in China. The textbook has the poem “Kompasim” (My compass) by Miraziz A’zam, in which the compass is likened to a watch. A comparison likens one thing to another.
Worked examples
“The compass”. A traveller lost his way in the mountains. He took a compass from his bag. The needle of the compass pointed north. The traveller remembered that his village was in the south and set off that way. The compass helped him not to get lost.
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
Class activity
