Stylistics of direct and indirect speech
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Make five direct speech sentences: two with author’s words before, two after, and one with a question.
For example: Nigora dedi: «Men tayyorman». (“I am ready.”) / «Bugun sovuq», – dedi Jasur. (“It is cold today,” said Jasur.) / «Vaqt necha bo‘ldi?» – deb so‘radi Zilola. (“What time is it?” asked Zilola.)
2
Convert «Ertaga mashqni topshiraman», – dedi Behruz. into indirect speech.
Behruz ertasi kuni mashqni topshirishini aytdi. (“Behruz said that he would hand in the exercise the next day.”)
3
Write a short 4-line dialogue between two people (with dashes).
For example: – Salom, uy vazifasini qildingmi? (“Hello, did you do your homework?”) – Ha, ammo oxirgi masala qiyin edi. (“Yes, but the last problem was hard.”) – Birga ko‘ramizmi? (“Shall we look at it together?”) – Mayli, tanaffusda. (“OK, at break.”)
4
Why is dialogue frequent in an artistic text? Give two reasons.
Dialogue shows a character’s speech vividly and reveals the character; it makes the text dynamic.
