Introduction: grammar and stylistics
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Write one piece of news about your school in two ways: as a text message to a friend and as a notice for the school board.
For example: text message – «Ertaga fizika ikkinchi darsda, esingdan chiqmasin» (“Physics is the second lesson tomorrow, don’t forget”). Notice – «Fizika darsi ertaga ikkinchi soatda o‘tkazilishi ma’lum qilinadi.» (“It is announced that the physics lesson will be held in the second period tomorrow.”)
2
Write four speech situations and name the fitting tone (official, friendly, scientific, narrative) for each.
For example: application to the head teacher – official; phone call with a friend – friendly; physics report – scientific; telling a tale – narrative.
3
In one sentence each, write which questions phonetics, lexicology, morphology and syntax answer.
Phonetics – sounds; lexicology – word meanings; morphology – word forms and parts of speech; syntax – structure of word combinations and sentences.
4
On one topic (for example, “the book”) write two sentences: one for a textbook, one for a letter to a friend. Explain the difference.
For example: «Kitob – bosma shakldagi axborot manbayi.» (“A book is a source of information in print.”) and «Kecha shunday qiziq kitob o‘qidimki, tunni sezmay qoldim.» (“Yesterday I read such an interesting book that I did not notice the night.”) The first is exact and neutral, the second personal and expressive.
