The technological process
Technology is the set of methods for getting a product by processing raw material or material and changing its state, properties and shape; each product has its own technology — for example, the methods of baking bread and of making shoes are completely different. A technological process is the sequence of all the technological operations that make up the processing of a product. Its stages are: shaping (cutting, pressure working, casting), changing material properties (thermal, chemical treatment), assembly, decoration, inspection and testing, and packing and delivery. A technological operation is a finished piece of work done without stopping by one worker at one workplace; it is in turn divided into smaller passes. A process is described by three features — its job (functional feature), its structure and its parameters — and to document it a technological sequence, a scheme, a graph and a technological map are drawn up.
Choose a simple dish or item (making tea, a paper boat) and split its process into 6 numbered operations. In class, pairs check each other’s sequence. Pick only safe actions: no boiling water or sharp tools.
