Practical work: making a simple moving robot
A simple moving robot model is made, following the technological map, from cardboard, a small direct-current motor, a wheel and a battery. First sizes are marked with a ruler and pencil, then the cardboard parts (leg, body, arm, head) are cut with scissors and glued with a glue gun. A disc and a wheel are fitted to the motor shaft, wires are connected to the motor, and glue is applied over them for protection. On the control panel a switch closes or opens the circuit: when closed, current flows from the battery to the motor, when open it stops; if the polarity is swapped, the motor turns the other way. When using scissors or a knife, put the part on the table to cut it and keep fingers out of the blade’s path; the glue gun and soldering iron get hot, so use them only under the teacher’s supervision. Use only a low-voltage battery up to 9 volts, never the household mains.
In pairs, draw templates of the robot parts on paper at half size (with your own sizes, e.g. leg 8 × 15 cm, body 19 × 15 cm). Work out the cardboard area for each part. Use scissors and the glue gun with the teacher’s permission; soldering is the teacher’s job.
