Practical work: making a draughts board and pieces
A draughts board is also made from a technological map: first a sketch is drawn, then the frame strips and a piece of plywood are cut. The strips are glued into a frame with PVA, the plywood is laid over it, and everything is held in clamps until the glue sets. The inner area is divided into equal squares, painted in two colours, and letters and numbers are written along the edges, so each square can be named, for example C5. The pieces are made by sawing a wooden rod into equal thicknesses, sanding them and painting them in two colours. Hand sawing and planing are done only under the teacher’s supervision, with goggles on, and only the teacher or a master works on the sawing machine; shavings are swept up with a brush after the tool has stopped. When working with paint and varnish, ventilate the room and wash your hands afterwards.
In pairs, draw the board sketch on paper at full size: frame, 2 cm margin, 8 × 8 squares and the edge letters and numbers. Show it to the teacher; do any real cutting and sawing only under their supervision.
