Practical work: making a gift box

Textbook: pp. 13–15
GoalKnow the sequence of making a wooden gift box from a technological map and the safety rules.
New words
small box (casket) · quticha (shkatulka)fret saw (jigsaw) · lobzik arraclamp · qisqichPVA wood glue · PVA yelimi
Explanation

The box is made from a technological map that lists the order of work, tools and sizes. First the walls, lid and base are measured and cut from wood, then the parts are glued with PVA and held in clamps while the glue sets. The textbook’s box has a hidden-lock lid called “oshiq-moshiq”: part of it is separated with a fret saw and then cleaned with a chisel. A simple pattern such as a plane-tree leaf is drawn on the lid, then the finished item is sanded and finished. Saws, chisels and the electric drill are used only under the teacher’s supervision: the part must be clamped firmly, hands kept out of the cutting path, and goggles worn.

Worked examples
If a 20 × 14 × 2 cm board is needed for the lid and base, two pieces are cut, each 20 cm long, 14 cm wide and 2 cm thick.
Glued parts must go into clamps at once and be held for some minutes; if rushed, the box corners shift.
Class activity

Class builds a technological-map table: each group fills 3 steps (e.g. cutting, gluing, sanding) with columns for size, tool and safety. Do any real cutting only under the teacher’s supervision, wearing goggles.

Practice
1
What information does a technological map hold?
2
How is the “oshiq-moshiq” part opened up?
3
What could happen if a part is sawn without being clamped?
4
Why are glued parts held in clamps?
