Explanation
In the book’s story “Kevin’s holidays” a boy waits for his holidays and his mother promises him a big surprise. I do not retell it here; instead I wrote my own short text on the theme. The text uses the past tense, will and would rather. Read it and answer the questions. Remember that plans can change, but with a good mood we can enjoy new chances.
Worked examples
“Dilshod’s plan”. Dilshod was waiting for the summer holidays. He planned to go swimming every day with his friends. But on the first morning it rained, and the next morning his sister was ill, so he stayed at home. At first he was sad. Then his grandfather said, “I will teach you to play chess.” By the end of the week Dilshod could beat his sister. “I’d rather play chess than swim,” he joked. He learned that a change of plan can bring a new hobby.
Mini-dialogue. — Why didn’t Dilshod go swimming? — It rained and his sister was ill. — What did his grandfather teach him? — To play chess.
