Explanation

The book gives the opening of J. K. Rowling’s novel “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (1997), where Mr Dursley meets strange events during one day. I have written my own mini-text and I do not retell that extract. The text uses the Past Simple and the Past Continuous: “When I was walking home, I saw ...” (one action was in progress when another happened). Story order words: First, Then, After that, Finally. Describe what you observe with clear details.

Worked examples
“The garden stars”. One evening, when Aziza was doing her homework, all the lights in the street went out. Then she saw small green lights moving in the garden. She was scared, so she took a torch and went outside with her grandfather. The lights were fireflies! After that the electricity came back, and Aziza wrote a story called “The garden stars”.
Mini-dialogue. — What was Aziza doing when the lights went out? — She was doing her homework. — What were the small lights? — Fireflies.
Class activity

“A strange event”: each pupil writes a five-sentence odd story (When I was ..., I saw ...) and the class suggests an ending.

Practice
1
From the text: What did Aziza see in the garden?
2
Past Continuous: she / do / her homework
3
Write three story-order words.
4
Why did Aziza go outside with her grandfather?
