Uvaysiy’s ghazals
Textbook: pp. 225–227
GoalUnderstand the content of Uvaysiy’s ghazals “Uvaysiyman” and “Sog‘indim”.
New words
ghazal, lyric poem of couplets · g‘azalcouplet · baythasbi hol, poem about one’s own state · hasbi hollonging · sog‘inch
Explanation
In the ghazal “Uvaysiyman” the poetess portrays herself as one afflicted with toil and pain, a friend of the people of sorrow. Saying she found no fidelity in the world, she calls on the heart to break its ties with the world and bind itself to God, and she argues with the ascetic. The ghazal “Sog‘indim” is a hasbi hol, a poem about one’s own state: it depicts a mother’s longing for her child. The mother calls herself a stranger and a wanderer, names her son “shohi davron” (king of the age) and “davlatli sulton” (a prosperous sultan), and waits with eyes fixed on his road. According to the book, the trace of parting from a child in the poetess’s fate can be felt in this ghazal.
Worked examples
Example: when a mother calls her son a “sultan”, it shows he is the dearest person in her eyes.
