Poems by Zavqiy
“Ajab ermas” is a muxammas, that is, a poem of five-line stanzas. It originally had seven stanzas but was presented in the Soviet period with four; the full text was restored and published in 1997 by the literary scholar Rustamjon Tojiboyev. Each stanza ends with a refrain meaning “it would be no wonder if...”: the poet expresses hope that good days may come. In the first stanza he wishes that the hard days of the colonial period would scatter like a cloud; later stanzas bring an address to his countrymen, a plea to the Creator, a dream of justice and prosperity and trust in the flowering of Farg‘ona. The textbook notes a likeness between one line of the poet and the Humo bird on the coat of arms of independent Uzbekistan.
