Explanation

Abdulhamid Sulaymon’s son Cho‘lpon was born in 1897 in the Qatorterak quarter of Andijon. His father Sulaymonqul mulla was a trader, and his mother Oysha aya knew many folk songs and tales. He studied at an old-style school, in madrasas and at a Russian-native school, and knew Uzbek, Turkish, Persian, Arabic and Russian. Cho‘lpon wrote poetry from about the age of sixteen, created the drama “Yorqinoy” (1921), and “Kecha va kunduz” is regarded as the first roman-dilogiya (two-part novel) in Uzbek literature; the manuscript of its second book was lost. He also translated works by Shakespeare, Blok, Gorky and Tagore into Uzbek. Cho‘lpon was arrested on 14 July 1937 and was shot in October 1938, during the years of repression. In the years of independence the “Kecha” part of “Kecha va kunduz” was published again.
