Making parts of carpentry items
Many wooden items are made for the kitchen, living room and bedroom. Before making an item, the kind of wood is chosen according to its purpose, considering the wood’s hardness and resistance to the effects of use. For example, a vegetable chopping board is usually made of wood of medium hardness. The order of work: the drawing is made or read, wood is chosen, measuring and marking out are done, then sawing, planing, drilling if needed, filing, sanding and joining the parts (legs with ordinary or wood screws or by a cut-in method). The board can be decorated with patterns. Hanging boards have a decorated back and are hung on a peg on the wall. For complex operations ask the teacher for help; drilling and sawing are done only under the teacher’s supervision.
Reading a drawing: the teacher gives a drawing of a simple board; pairs find length, width, thickness and hole positions and write the work order in 8 steps. No real tools are used.
