Abrasive paper for wood
Before finishing a surface it is rubbed with abrasive paper to improve its straightness and clean it. Sharp edges and corners are first filed and then sanded. Abrasive paper is cloth or thick paper with fine hard minerals or glass powder glued to one side. According to the textbook classification, by grain size, it is coarse (No. 6, 5, 4), medium (No. 3, 2), fine (No. 1, 0) and finishing (No. 00). Order: coarse first, then medium, finally fine. When sanding a surface, the paper is fixed on a special wooden block and moved along the grain. Small wooden parts are placed on paper fixed on a flat board and rubbed in different directions. A ready cut template is convenient for putting a pattern on a surface. Sanding makes dust: a mask is worn and the room aired.
Smoothing test: two halves of a soft wood piece: one is sanded only with coarse paper, the other from coarse to fine. Compare the results by feel (carefully) and write the difference. A mask is worn.
