Explanation
A doston is a long poetic work, common in folk oral tradition too: it has many events and only one or two main heroes. “Oygul bilan Baxtiyor” is a poetic tale by the poet Hamid Olimjon (1909–1944). The textbook gives a text with this title in which the author recalls tales told by his grandmother. We do not repeat it; we read our own text. A child who listens to tales gets a wider imagination and richer speech.
Worked examples
“Grandmother’s tale nights”. On winter nights grandmother gathered us around her and told tales. She told each tale in a different voice, sometimes frightening, sometimes making us laugh. In her tales a kind hero always overcame evil. After the tale ended we lay thinking for a long time. Now I tell those tales to my little brother. I have concluded that tales teach us goodness.
Signs of a doston: large size, poetic form, one or two main heroes, many events.
