The clock

Textbook: Part 2, pp. 38–40
GoalUnderstand the value of time; know kinds of clocks and units of time.
New words
clock, hour · soatminute · daqiqashadow · soyahourglass · qum soati
Explanation

A clock measures time. One hour has 60 minutes, and one day has 24 hours. In ancient times people used the shadow of the Sun: this is a sundial. Later came the hourglass, then mechanical clocks. Clock hands turn in the direction of the shadow on a sundial, that is, left to right (clockwise). The textbook has the poem “Soat” (The clock) by Zahro Hasanova. We do not repeat it; we read our own text.

Worked examples
“The wealth of time”. In ancient times people stuck a stick near the house and told the time by its shadow. When the shadow was short, it was noon. Now each of us has a clock. But a clock only shows time; we have to learn to value it. A child who gets up on time in the morning is not late for lessons. Grandfather says that if time is lost it cannot be returned.
Calculation: 2 hours = 120 minutes. 1 day = 24 hours.
Class activity

“Shadow clock”: on a sunny day children measure the length of a stick’s shadow twice and observe the change.

3
How many minutes are in 1 hour?
4
How does the child learn to value time?
5
Name two kinds of clocks.
