The joy of winter
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 58–62
GoalTell how snow forms and why winter is useful; know safety rules for winter games.
New words
snow · qorvapour · bug‘icy wind · izg‘irinsafety · xavfsizlik
Explanation
Snow is tiny crystals formed when water vapour in the air freezes in the cold. They join to make snowflakes. Snow protects the ground from the cold, and in spring it melts and gives water to the soil. The textbook has the story “Qishning ko‘rpasi” (The quilt of winter) by Dilfuza Shomalikova, where a grandchild talks with his grandfather about winter. In winter games we must be careful.
Worked examples
“Snow”. Snow forms when water vapour in the air freezes in the cold. Tiny ice crystals join to form snowflakes. Snow covers the ground like a quilt and protects it from cold. In spring it melts and gives the soil water. In winter we go sledging, but we are careful on ice.
Fun fact: in some countries of the southern hemisphere December is a summer month.
Class activity
Cut a paper snowflake; each child writes one winter rule on it (e.g. “I don’t go onto the ice”).
Practice
1
How does snow form?
Water vapour freezes in the cold.
2
What does snow protect the ground from?
From the cold
3
What does the melted snow give in spring?
Water to the soil
4
How should we behave on ice in winter?
We are careful.
5
Name 3 winter games.
For example: sledging, building a snowman, snowballs
