Explanation

A conscious choice begins with knowing yourself: a person who understands their strengths and weaknesses and thinks independently can set their own path well. Because a profession has an important place in everyone’s life, this decision should be taken without hurry, thoughtfully and by the person themselves. For a choice to be considered conscious it is considered whether the profession’s demands match one’s interest, inclination, ability, health, practical experience gained in the field of work and working conditions. In addition the present needs of society and the directions of the country’s economic development are considered; that is, a person compares their abilities with society’s needs and moral principles. Independence is the person’s full initiative in choosing a profession, but this does not mean ignoring the advice of experienced people: the skill of adults working in the profession is taken into account. For this use sources of information: a catalogue of professions, a visit to a workplace, an exhibition and a talk with a master. Visits and tries are made only with adults and the teacher, in safe conditions.

Worked examples
Muhammad talks to the technology teacher, goes on a factory excursion (with the teacher) and then decides: this is a conscious and independent choice.
Choosing a profession only because friends chose it is an unconscious choice: one’s own interests and health are not considered.
Class activity

Choice card: pick one profession and rate yourself on 6 factors (interest, inclination, ability, health, experience, working conditions) on a 5-point scale. Work out the total and write which demands are hard. Compare notes with 2 classmates.
