Classification of professions and kinds of work
By the textbook the classification of professions can be pictured as a four-layer pyramid: types, categories, divisions and groups of professions. By object of labour, professions fall into five types: “person–nature” (agronomist, livestock breeder, zootechnician), “person–technology” (carpenter, tailor, turner, electrical fitter, driver), “person–person” (kindergarten teacher, doctor, teacher), “person–sign system” (translator, programmer, accountant, engineer) and “person–artistic image” (actor, composer, artist). By the aim of labour three categories are separated: knowing, teaching and researching. By means of labour there are four divisions: manual labour, hand-controlled machines, work with automated apparatus, and professions needing more working tools. By working conditions there are four groups: work in ordinary (household) conditions (accountant, teacher), work outdoors with changes in temperature and humidity (builder, farmer), unusual conditions (pilot, miner, diver) and work needing heightened responsibility for people’s life and health (doctor, teacher). In professions with dangerous conditions safety rules, protective clothing and special training are compulsory.
Card classification: sort 12 profession names (zootechnician, carpenter, doctor, translator, artist, bulldozer operator, teacher, programmer, composer, agronomist, diver, accountant) into 5 types, then mark their groups by working conditions. Write one sentence on which type you like and why.
