Explanation
This is a moral story. A daughter tells her mother that life is hard. The mother takes her to the kitchen and boils three pots of water. She puts a carrot in one, an egg in another and ground coffee beans in the third. The carrot becomes soft, the egg becomes hard inside, and the coffee changes the water – its smell and colour go into it. The mother asks: when problems come, how do you react? The main idea is that the way we respond to difficulty matters. When you read, find the characters, events and lesson; the story is told in the Past Simple. Only work with boiling water together with an adult.
Worked examples
Retelling frame: A girl complained to her mother about her problems. Her mother boiled three pots of water. She put a carrot, an egg and coffee beans into them. After a while the carrot was soft, the egg was hard and the coffee had changed the water. The mother asked her daughter which one she wanted to be.
Moral in one sentence: Problems are like hot water; they can make us weak, they can make us hard, or we can use them to change things for the better.
