How important is literature?
Textbook: p. 30
GoalTalking about the importance of literature, asking about books, and a writer’s biography and “Quick Facts” card.
New words
author · yozuvchi, muallifplot · syujetmain character · bosh qahramonbiography · tarjimai hol
Explanation
Literature helps us learn about other people, times and countries; a reader can “live” many lives. To ask about a book: What is your favourite genre? Who wrote it? Who is the hero? What happens in the story? A biography tells how someone lived from birth to the present or to death: when and where they were born, what they did and what they wrote. A Quick Facts card is a short summary (Born, Died, Famous works). When we report words that are still true now, the verb tense can stay the same: Dilnoza said she likes poetry. Say: Charles Dickens was born in 1812.
Worked examples
Quick Facts. Jules Verne. Born: 8 February 1828, Nantes, France. Died: 24 March 1905, Amiens, France. Famous works: Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days.
— What is your favourite genre? — Adventure. — Who wrote your favourite book? — Jules Verne. — What is the plot? — A man tries to travel round the world in eighty days.
Class activity
“Guess the writer”: the teacher reads three facts from a Quick Facts card and pupils name the writer (Dickens, Verne, Christie).
