Explanation
Trees clean the air, give oxygen and are homes for animals. Their growth depends on the climate: fast in warm, wet places and slow in cold ones. A Great Basin bristlecone pine growing in California is among the oldest single trees on Earth, at more than 4,800 years. Paper is made from wood pulp: Logs are cut into small chips, the chips are cooked with water into pulp, the pulp is pressed into thin sheets, and the sheets are dried on hot rollers. This process is told in the Present Simple Passive (is/are + past participle). Recycled paper needs less energy and water and saves trees. Three rules: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Tips: switch off lights and chargers when you leave a room; repair things instead of throwing them away; take old batteries to a special collection point and never burn them; swap books and clothes with others.
Worked examples
Our class recycles paper. Every Friday old notebooks are collected in a big box. The box is taken to a recycling centre. There the paper is mixed with water and made into new paper. Less energy is needed than for paper from new trees.
Tips: Switch off the light when you leave a room. Repair a broken toy instead of buying a new one. Swap books with your friends. Give old clothes to people who need them.
Class activity
“Path of paper”: groups put the stages of making paper in order using the passive (are cut into chips, is pressed, is dried ...).

Why must old batteries never be burned?
Because they can explode and release poisonous substances; they must go to a collection point.
