She says that ...
Textbook: p. 16
GoalChanging direct speech into indirect speech with says that ... (tense stays, pronouns change).
New words
tabloid · bulvar (yengil) gazetaquality newspaper · sifatli gazetapolitics · siyosatentertainment · ko‘ngilochar tomosha
Explanation
We can report someone’s words in two ways. Direct Speech gives the exact words: She says, “I follow sports news.” Indirect Speech gives the meaning in our own words: She says that she follows sports news. When the reporting verb is in the present (says), the tense inside does not change: says, “I am tired” → says that she is tired. Only the pronouns change according to meaning: I → he/she, we → they, my → his/her, our → their. We can leave out that: She says she reads the news. In direct speech we use quotation marks and a comma; in indirect speech we do not.
Worked examples
Direct: Nodira says, “I love reading magazines.” Indirect: Nodira says that she loves reading magazines. Direct: The boys say, “We watch the news every evening.” Indirect: The boys say that they watch the news every evening.
Chain drill. A: My brother works in a newspaper office. B (to the class): Aziz says that his brother works in a newspaper office.

“Chain drill”: A says something about themselves (I am sleepy), B reports it to the class (Aziz says that he is sleepy). Continue round the class.

Why does the tense not change after says?
Because the report is about the present, so the verb can stay as it is.
