Explanation

Cinema grew out of several inventions. In 1878 Eadweard Muybridge used a row of cameras to photograph a running horse one picture after another, which opened the way to showing movement in pictures. In the 1890s William Dickson worked in Thomas Edison’s laboratory on the kinetoscope, and on 28 December 1895 the Lumière brothers held a paid public screening in Paris. The first films were silent; films with sound appeared in the late 1920s. Charlie Chaplin (1889–1977) was the best-known actor of the silent era. In a True / False / Not Given task we mark Not Given when the text does not say it.
