Explanation

Parts of a theatre hall: the stalls (the lower seats in front of the stage), the dress circle (the first upper level), the balcony (the top level), the box (a small private area), the orchestra pit (where musicians sit). The stage and the curtain. At the theatre: cloakroom – where we leave coats; programme – a booklet about the show; cast – the performers; interval – a break; performance – the show. Booking tickets: Can I book two tickets for the evening performance? Where are the seats? We are in the stalls, row 5. The Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre in Tashkent opened in 1947; opera and ballet are shown in its hall. Theatre manners: arrive before the start, switch off your phone, do not disturb the actors, and applaud at the right moments.

Worked examples
Last month our class saw a comedy at a theatre in our city. Our teacher had booked seats in the dress circle, so we could see the whole stage. Before the show we read the programme and found our favourite actor in the cast. In the interval we talked about the funniest scenes. At the end the actors bowed and we gave them a long round of applause.
A: Hello, can I book two tickets for Saturday evening? B: Stalls or dress circle? A: Stalls, please, row five. B: That’s 120,000 so‘m. A: Thank you. What time does the performance start? B: At seven o’clock.
Class activity

Role play: in pairs book tickets at the box office and talk in the interval.
