Explanation
Mass media are the ways of giving information to a very large number of people at the same time. There are three kinds: print media (newspapers, magazines, books), broadcast media (radio and television) and digital media (websites, apps, podcasts). Long ago people sent news by smoke signal or by messenger. Around 1450 Johannes Gutenberg built a printing press with movable type in Europe, in 1876 Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for the telephone, television appeared in the 1920s, and in 1991 Tim Berners-Lee put the first website online. Word-building: verb + -er/-or = the person who does the job (invent → inventor, teach → teacher); verb + -ion/-tion = a noun (communicate → communication, collect → collection); we drop a silent -e (decorate → decoration).
Worked examples
Long ago a king sent a messenger on horseback to carry an important letter. Today a reporter sends the same news to millions of people in a few seconds by phone. Newspaper and magazine are print media; radio and TV are broadcast media; a news website is digital media.
invent + or = inventor; direct + or = director; collect + ion = collection; celebrate + ion = celebration; educate + ion = education.
